I am pondering using Open Office on my new computer, but don’t have a lot of experience with it. I assume you recommend it, but would like to know why (other than the setting us free from our Microsoft overlords).

Well, my office suite needs are quite simple and do not, in any way, justify purchasing the multi-hundred dollar program that is MS Office. It’s absurd, the price MS sets for that suite.
So, I use OOo because it is free and because it meets my needs. What I do not have a lot of experience with is how it interacts with MS Office documents. Importing and exporting Word docs or Excel files just isn’t something I do a lot of with OOo. So I can’t speak all that well about how it does (or does not) work. From what I have done, the formatting has been fine.
